Cost savings is a universal destination. And optimizing efficiencies is the path to get there. When it comes to optimizing efficiencies for packaging we must consider each aspect of the package’s lifecycle to become truly efficient and realize overall cost savings.

The Lifecycle of a Package

The lifecycle of a package can be broken down into 5 stages.

  1. How the package was created?
  2. How it protects the product?
  3. How it transports?
  4. How it displays the product and impacts customer experience?
  5. How it ends up after use?

Breaking Down the Life Cycle Stages To Optimize Efficiency

Stage 1: How was the packaging created?

Consumers have been placing a greater emphasis on using eco friendly products. They feel good about purchasing these products that take into consideration the environment. You need cost effective packaging that is still eco friendly.

Stage 2How does the packaging protect the product?

This is obviously key to the packaging’s purpose. Does it offer the proper protection to allow it to arrive to the consumer in optimal condition. This seems basic enough however there are details that can be overlooked. Your packaging needs to offer the right amount of protection to ensure no damage but still needs to be lightweight and right sized to save on shipping costs. There is a balance.

Stage 3: How does the packaging hold up in transport?

Not only does your packaging need to protect the product during transport, it needs to hold up itself to the rigors of transport. It does not make a strong impression on the consumer to have a package delivered with a shoddy and damaged outer packaging. Even if the inner product is in tact. And as we mentioned above, the packaging should be lightweight enough and optimally sized to save on shipping.

Stage 4: How does it display the product and impact customer experience?

This is often overlooked but your packaging is an extension of your brand. The first impression your product will give is its packaging. Make sure it represents your product and your brand in the best light. That includes graphics, how it holds up, how it supports your product and the ease of the packaging for the customer. It should be easy to open, not have a lot of waste, and easy to dispose of when finished.

Stage 5: What happens to the packaging after it’s served its purpose?

As much as customers want packaging to be created from sustainable materials they look for it to be recyclable even more. They also do not want the inconvenience of messy packaging that produces a lot of waste. It should be easy for them to dispose of the packaging in a way that makes them feel positive about it.

Optimizing packaging efficiencies can have a far reaching effect on the business affecting the bottom line. Packaging not only represents your brand through each stage of its lifecycle providing customer satisfaction if done correctly but the right efficiencies can also offer cost savings.

Corrugated is often the best choice for each stage of the lifecycle. It is created from sustainable materials, provides strength and durability when it comes to protection and it is lightweight and can be designed with optimal size and shape for the product. It easily accepts print and is able to showcase your brand while providing little mess. It is also easy for the customer to dispose of and is recyclable.
